Governing boards, having control of school premises, must take reasonable steps to ensure the health and safety of the school environment, including buildings and equipment, ensuring that adequate arrangements are in place in line with policies and procedures.  The school governor’s role in health and safety session has been designed to ensure governors have sufficient knowledge and a reasonable overview of current health and safety requirements in schools, to effectively support the Headteacher and senior leadership team.

The session, delivered by a Health & Safety specialist, will provide Academy & School Governors with an overview of their responsibilities as employer under health and safety legislation, and also an understanding of the employee responsibilities.  The session will also include an overview of how the senior leadership team should be managing and monitoring health and safety, and to ensure that any risks to health and safety are controlled.

This 1x2 hour session course from The Teaching School Alliance is suitable for all school governors who wish to have a good understanding of external & internal data in schools and how to use their knowledge to support and challenge including monitoring and evaluation of specific groups: for example disadvantaged pupils, Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) and a discussion of the uses of Analyse School Performance (ASP) and Fischer Family trust data (FFT). The session will also look at a cycle of monitoring and reviewing data and how to develop terms of reference for relevant committees.

  • The governor as critical friend balancing challenge and support in your role as a governor. Monitoring and evaluating school performance, visiting your school and monitoring the progress of your school's improvement plan.
  • Accountability holding effective meetings and representing the parents and staff in your role as a school governor. The accountability of the headteacher through his/her reporting role to governors.

This 2 hour session will develop Governor knowledge and understanding of pupil achievement for both the terminal "hard" data and also "softer" in-year or monitoring of data.

We will look at the different data coming into schools and also how Governor's can support and challenge effectively when presented with data about pupils.

Suitable for governors in Academies and Maintained Schools who wish to explore safeguarding issues, particularly from the governors' perspective. The session will provide background information, opportunities to discuss case studies and look at being prepared for Ofsted. It aims to raise governors' knowledge of safeguarding issues and increase their confidence in knowing how to deal with situations appropriately. The training is regularly updated to include changes in governance legislation and new initiatives.
