This bitesize course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption focusses on the growing issue in regards to Gangs and Knife Crime and is applicable to any Northamptonshire Foster Carer, Adoptive Parents or Connected Persons.

This course will help delegates to:

  • Have an increased awareness of the growing gang culture in the county
  • Be able to support the early identification and intervention for YP at risk
  • Increase awareness of services available - look at CIRV (Community to Reduce Violence)
  • Be able to identify risk and respond appropriately
  • Learn to use the 'signs of gang involvement screen tool'
  • Explore gang language and terminology and how this impacts on YP in the county


This 1 hour session from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is delivered by Blue Cross Training with 2 temperament assessed education dogs present and is for Foster Carers and Young People.

This session is a general overview of the needs of pets and is aimed at under 5's, this session introduces about being responsible for our dog and teaches young people about pet welfare, staying safe around dots and responsible pet ownership from an early age.

This 1 hour session from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is delivered by Blue Cross Training with 2 temperament assessed education dogs present and is for Supervising Social Workers in Fostering and Adoption who wish to:

Learn about dog safety and dog body language which should be useful when supervising Social Workers risk assess a dog.


13th August 2019 - 9.30am-10.30am - One Angel Square, Northampton NN1 1ED

This course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers who offer a Foster Care Progression Scheme offering an opportunity to progress to the Advanced Level within the Fostering Service. 

If the Applicants meet the pre requisite Advanced Level Requirements, then one aspect of the Supporting Evidence includes a Case Study that should be structured as follows:

• The Case Study should present a brief description and detailed critical analysis of at least 1 child or young person the Foster Carer/s has looked after.

• Links will also need to be made to training undertaken in relation to the child/young person

• Referencing linked to relevant research and literature is to be completed

Please note: you will be required to complete homework between the two sessions.

Before booking please ask your Supervising Social Worker to advise if you are eligible to apply for this Level. You must have completed TSD and be 2 years post approval.

This 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Person Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Undertake a general review of allegations made against foster carers to provide perspective, to identify the differences between complaints, causes for concern, allegations and to discuss why allegations are made
  • Understand what happens at Northamptonshire County Council when an allegation is made and details of the National Minimum Standards 2011 as they relate to allegations
  • Consider the key activities foster carers can undertake to help protect themselves as much as possible

This 3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Adopters.

Who wish to:

  • Look at the environmental and neurological context of attachment formation
  • Examine how early childhood trauma has long term effects
  • Identify some of the recognised symptoms of attachment difficulties and their effect on Adopters Explore parenting and therapeutic approaches

This 3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Family Link and Connected Person Carers.

Who wish to:

Baby Brain training is a 3x3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development and is available for Northamptonshire Foster Carers accompanied by their Supervising Social Worker (unless the SSW has previously attended this training then carers can attend without a worker) and who have a baby in placement or a toddler under the age of 2 years.

You will learn:

  • Babies' Brain Development
  • Babies' Emotional Development
  • Babies' Playing and Laughing

You will need to complete all 3 sessions.

This 5 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers and Adopters.

Who wish to:

  • Know how to observe and record children's development
  • Know milestones in child development
  • Know about indicators of developmental delay and developmental impairment
  • Understand the impact abuse can have on children's development

This 3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Understand what 'sexual exploitation', 'grooming' and 'trafficking' mean
  • Understand what might make a young person vulnerable to sexual exploitation
  • Recognise the signs of sexual exploitation

This is a 2 x 4 hour session course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Connected Persons only not for general Foster Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Have the opportunity to increase your support networks through discussion of shared experiences
  • Explore key issues faced by Connected People Foster Carers including statutory requirements and assessment processes Identify risky behaviour and strategies to keep children safe
  • Understand the impact of Separation and Loss on children and explore how to support children to recover from this
  • Develop understanding of issues arising from managing contact for children
  • Develop confidence and skills in supporting children within their education.

This 2 x 2 hour evening course or 4 hour daytime course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Help participants understand the legal context of contact.
  • Ensure delegates appreciate the importance of contact for the child.
  • Help delegates to be better equipped in managing the process of contact

This is a 1 day course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters and Family link Carers and Connected Persons who may be called to court regarding looked after children.

Who wish to:

  • Understand how to give evidence and the potential for being cross examined

  • Learn the pitfalls and tips for why we give evidence and how to do it for the best possible outcome
  • Discuss and explore the legislative framework
  • Understand the court room procedures

This 4 hour course from  LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

Who wish to:

  • Understand relevant legislation including Care Planning, Placement and Case Review (England) Regulations 2010, the Fostering Services Regulations 2011 and associated statutory guidance, which came into force in April 2011 and Amendments to the Children Act 1989 Guidance and Regulations, July 2013
  • Develop fully your understanding of the Delegated authority policy 2013 for children in foster care
  • Understand how decisions are made in practice
  • Explore foster carers' responsibility and how this relates to everyday practice

This 1 day course from  LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adoptive Parents, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

Who wish to:

  • Aim to develop the awareness, knowledge and confidence of the carer to support the learning of children
  • Focus on the early skills and knowledge children need as a foundation for wider learning
  • Look at the opportunities in daily experiences to further learning and understanding
  • Develop strategies for improving progress in reading and maths that are fun and relaxed as well as structured and challenging

This 2 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Foster Carers, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers and Adopters.

Who wish to:

  • Develop your understanding of the concept of diversity
  • Understand some of the legal frameworks that affect equality
  • Be able to identify the differences that contribute to our diverse population e.g. race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, disability, religion, culture, background, education and many other areas
  • Increase your understanding in valuing the uniqueness of each individual and the importance of our behaviour in contributing to empowering

This is a 2 hour course from  LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers. This course forms part of the Fostering core training.

Who wish to:

  • To understand the roles and responsibilities of various different partners (including carers) in the education of the looked-after child.
  • To develop an understanding of how foster carers can make a positive impact on the education of looked-after children.

This 4 hour (2 x 2 hour evening or 1 x 5 hour session including break) course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers and Adopters. This is a key requirement for Fosterers, Adopters and Carers who may have to deal with a range of minor accidents and injuries.

•Understand what is effective in the process of helping children to regulate their emotions

•Look at the benefits of using positive reinforcements within behaviour management

•Experience improved behaviour and better relationships as a result of the training programme

•Contribute to the continued stability of foster placements

This course from  LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers.  It is a 12 week programme delivered in 12 x 3 hour weekly sessions.
