This 4 hour course run over two evenings from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers.

By the end of the course you will:

  • Identify the process of separation and loss
  • Discuss reactions to separation and loss
  • Look at the effects of separation and loss on children and young people
  • Explore methods available to Carers/Adoptive Parents to help support children or young people.

This 2 x 2 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Fostering and Adoption is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers and  Adoptive Parents

Who wish to:

  • Have an awareness regarding the impact of abuse
  • Discuss dealing with disclosures of abuse
  • Consider the implications of the above for children
  • Apply a variety of methods to enable you to communicate safely and appropriately with children and young people
  • Learn about the investigative process in the event of an allegation having been made against a Carer/Adoptive Parent

  • This course highlights how misunderstandings leading to allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents may be prevented. It looks at safe coping strategies for Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents and young people should tempers run high.


    This course forms part of the Fostering core training and should be completed Post Approval Year 1

    

    This 2 x 2 hour evening course or 4 hour daytime course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Fostering and Adoption is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

    • Help participants understand the legal context of contact.
    • Ensure delegates appreciate the importance of contact for the child.
    • Help delegates to be better equipped in managing the process of contact

    This 2 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Person Carers.

    Who wish to:

    • Have an introduction to the Northamptonshire County Council's Heritage Planning framework
    • Understand the Local Authority's policy and procedures on recording
    • Understand the importance of recording
    • Have explored recording methods
    • Have explored the importance of confidentiality
    • Have explored the use of appropriate language

    This 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is for Northamptonshire Adopters. This session is aimed at adopters to engage with the challenges and opportunities of transracial adoption. Specifically, the session will use the Transracial Identity Model (Ung, O'Connor and Pillidge, 2012) to consider how racial identity is influenced in four ways: individual, family, community and society. Importantly, the session will enable adopters to consider how they can apply cultural competence as the bridge between their own family culture and that of the cultural heritage of their adopted child(ren) through the application of a number of cultural socialisation practices.


    This 3.5 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adoptive Parents, Family Link and Connected Person Carers.

    Who wish to:

    • Identify what Life Story work is and what it is not.
    • Have knowledge of a way of working with children and young people fro the perspective of the adoptive parents and carers.
    • Understand what adopters and foster carers do with this information in the short and long term.
    • Gain ideas for integrating Life Story work into everyday life.

    This 3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Person Carers.

    Who wish to:

    • Undertake a general review of allegations made against foster carers to provide perspective, to identify the differences between complaints, causes for concern, allegations and to discuss why allegations are made
    • Understand what happens at Northamptonshire County Council when an allegation is made and details of the National Minimum Standards 2011 as they relate to allegations
    • Consider the key activities foster carers can undertake to help protect themselves as much as possible.

    This 2 x 2 hour session course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

    Who wish to:

    • Understand the legal, policy and procedural issues involved and how to apply them in your area of work
    • Name the categories of abuse and recognise possible indicators of abuse
    • Describe what to do if you have a concern about a child or young person's welfare
    • Relate safeguarding issues to your own practice

    This 5 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers and Adopters.

    Who wish to:

    • Know how to observe and record children's development
    • Know milestones in child development
    • Know about indicators of developmental delay and developmental impairment
    • Understand the impact abuse can have on children's development

    This 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers for Foster Carers and Adopters.

    By the end of the session you will be able to:

    • Recognise how identity is formed through a variety of factors including personal experiences, cultural and environmental factors
    • Recognise that identity can be imposed and the effect of this
    • Identify a series of supportive approaches such as attention to life stories and biography that can be used to help children and young people in care reframe their identity and that which is imposed upon them.
    This 2 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Family Link and Connected Person Carers. This session is specifically aimed at enabling foster carers and adopters to understand and appreciate how difference and diversity can be valued and appreciated. As part of achieving this, participants will be provided with an understanding of why it is important to provide care that respects each child's protected characteristic as defined by the Equality Act 2010 and will be supported to develop skills to effectively manage unconscious bias and overt discrimination, as well as enhance the self-worth of children and young people in their care.

    This 2 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Family Link and Connected Person Carers. This session is aimed at enabling foster carers and adopters effectively work across cultures that inclusive of their own and the child(ren) that they are caring for. The session will focus on enabling participant's to appreciate the different ways of understanding events and relationships that exist within diverse cultures. Through a series of case studies and exercises participants will explore how they can apply the key skills of cultural competence to promote the child or young person's welfare.


    This bitesize course from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption focusses on the growing issue in regards to Gangs and Knife Crime and is applicable to any Northamptonshire Foster Carer, Adoptive Parents or Connected Persons.

    This course will help delegates to:

    • Have an increased awareness of the growing gang culture in the county
    • Be able to support the early identification and intervention for YP at risk
    • Increase awareness of services available - look at CIRV (Community to Reduce Violence)
    • Be able to identify risk and respond appropriately
    • Learn to use the 'signs of gang involvement screen tool'
    • Explore gang language and terminology and how this impacts on YP in the county


    This 1 hour session from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is delivered by Blue Cross Training with 2 temperament assessed education dogs present and is for Foster Carers and Young People.

    This session is a general overview of the needs of pets and is aimed at under 5's, this session introduces about being responsible for our dog and teaches young people about pet welfare, staying safe around dots and responsible pet ownership from an early age.

    This 1 hour session from LGSS Learning and Development on behalf of Northamptonshire Fostering and Adoption is delivered by Blue Cross Training with 2 temperament assessed education dogs present and is for Supervising Social Workers in Fostering and Adoption who wish to:

    Learn about dog safety and dog body language which should be useful when supervising Social Workers risk assess a dog.


    13th August 2019 - 9.30am-10.30am - One Angel Square, Northampton NN1 1ED

    This course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers who offer a Foster Care Progression Scheme offering an opportunity to progress to the Advanced Level within the Fostering Service. 

    If the Applicants meet the pre requisite Advanced Level Requirements, then one aspect of the Supporting Evidence includes a Case Study that should be structured as follows:

    • The Case Study should present a brief description and detailed critical analysis of at least 1 child or young person the Foster Carer/s has looked after.

    • Links will also need to be made to training undertaken in relation to the child/young person

    • Referencing linked to relevant research and literature is to be completed

    Please note: you will be required to complete homework between the two sessions.

    Before booking please ask your Supervising Social Worker to advise if you are eligible to apply for this Level. You must have completed TSD and be 2 years post approval.

    • Examine how early childhood trauma has long term effects
    • Identify some of the recognised symptoms of attachment difficulties and their effect on Adopters Explore parenting and therapeutic approaches
