  • Consider attachment needs, trust and personal behaviour
  • Provide techniques and strategies to help manage behaviour
  • Identify when additional support may be needed
  • Recognise the importance of self care for parents and carers and strategies to aid this

 

This is a course over 2 evenings (2 hrs each), from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Foster Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Be able to better prepare children and young people to move on in a way which meets their needs
  • Be able to consider the practical and emotional needs of all involved in helping the child or young person to move on
  • Identify the various supports which can be put in place for Carers during the transition period

This 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Foster Carers

Who wish to:

  • Promote a 'whole approach' to the support provided to for individuals with challenging behaviour
  • Promote good practice which is safe, complies with legal guidance
  • To provide understanding of the issues around behaviour and challenging behaviour
  • To develop understanding of the functions of challenging behaviour and how behaviour serves a purpose for an individual
  • To develop a process of behaviour support planning which meets the individual's needs in a more positive way
  • To ensure awareness of the duty of care
  • To ensure competence in the sue of the core principals relating to physical interventions (where appropriate to your home environment)

  • Have explored recording methods
  • Have explored the importance of confidentiality
  • Have explored the use of appropriate language

This 4 x 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Fostering Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Develop your awareness of a range of potential needs and challenges that children and young people may experience
  • Recognise some of the potential complexities that early childhood experiences may bring to present relationships
  • Develop knowledge in key Psychological theories that can aid our understanding of children and young people
  • Enhance key skills in communicating with children and young people using a range of mediums including play and creativity
  • Recognise the importance of self-care for parents and carers and strategies to aid this.

This 4 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

  • Be introduced to a range of behaviour management techniques
  • Consider how and when to apply behaviour management techniques.

You must have completed Psychology Stage 1 prior to attending this course.

Who wish to:

  • Gain a greater awareness of the ways in which the behaviour affects the Adoptive Parent/Carer and how this can influence the way it is managed
  • Consider the way that the adolescent may feel about being or having been in care
  • Explore the concept of giving permission for the young person to have these feelings
  • Gain a greater understanding of the impact life experience can have on behaviour
  • Understand the feelings that may be fuelling the behaviour
  • Explore the balance between accepting the adolescent but not the behaviour.

Look at a variety of creative techniques to help the Carer/Adoptive Parent engage the child.

This 2 x 2 hour session course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

Who wish to:

  • Understand the legal, policy and procedural issues involved and how to apply them in your area of work
  • Name the categories of abuse and recognise possible indicators of abuse
  • Describe what to do if you have a concern about a child or young person's welfare
  • Relate safeguarding issues to your own practice

This 2 x 2 hour evening course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers.

Who wish to:

  • Have an awareness regarding the impact of abuse
  • Discuss dealing with disclosures of abuse
  • Consider the implications of the above for children
  • Apply a variety of methods to enable you to communicate safely and appropriately with children and young people
  • Learn about the investigative process in the event of an allegation having been made against a Carer/Adoptive Parent

This course highlights how misunderstandings leading to allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents may be prevented. It looks at safe coping strategies for Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents and young people should tempers run high.

This course forms part of the Fostering core training and should be completed Post Approval Year 1

This 1 day course from  LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

  • Understand the importance and need for home safety
  • Be able to identify who is most at risk from home accidents and look at the reasons why
  • Explore causes, consequences and the related costs of home accidents
  • Be provided with accident prevention measures and methods of assessing, prioritizing and controlling risk -Develop skills and knowledge in effective interventions and how to evaluate them.

This is a 3 hour course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers, Adopters, Family Link and Connected Persons Carers

  • Increase your awareness of self harm
  • Understand the key issues faced by children and young people who self harm
  • Understand how to spot the ‘warning signs’ of self harm
  • Be able to respond better to young people who self harm

This 4 hour course run over two evenings from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers is for Fostering Carers. By the end of the course you will:

By the end of the course you will: Help the foster carer understand that Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement Develop the foster carers understanding of the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and childHelp the foster carer understand that Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and ChallengeEnable foster carers to develop an understanding of Theraplay sessions creating an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding

This course from LGSS Learning and Development is for Northamptonshire Foster Carers - we welcome all Foster Carers to attend this 2 hour workshop that will guide you through a process to view and re-consider common pressures and stress points in your life while also guiding you in effective and healthy coping strategies. With a greater and less emotive appreciation of what triggers your stress, an understanding of the biological and psychological responses to stress and reviewing how we react when under adverse pressure, we can start to consider how to reduce and cope with these stressful life events. Delivered in a relaxed and conversational style, your specific examples and stressors will be private to yourself and not shared with others. 

 Workshop Aims:

At the end of the session you will:
- Understand what ‘stress’ is and why we respond as we do. 
- Categorise your stresses and consider your levels of control ready for positive actions to reduce or remove.
- Recognise healthy coping strategies and plan in some of your own.
- Understand the important role of personal resilience and complete some practical exercises to help develop your personal resilience

- Consider emotionally healthy behaviours to maintain your personal resilience as a Foster Carer.
- Understand the link between a healthy body for a healthy mind.


This course from LGSS Learning and Development for Northamptonshire Foster Carers and Adopters will look at the importance for children in having a sense of belonging whilst retaining a clear identity.  Being a Looked After Child will have an impact on a child’s sense of self and emotional wellbeing.  They may feel displaced and find it difficult to retain their identity within a new family environment.
