The impact on our lives and work of the Covid-19 situation has been significant. We’ve all had to adapt to a new rhythm of life, unfamiliar methods of working and different ways of keeping in touch with people and because our brain interprets all change initially as a threat, this will inevitably have some impact on our mental health.  However, for managers, there is an added challenge of, not only managing their own wellbeing, but also that of those in their team. Never has it been more important for managers to lead and support people to maintain positive mental health, than now.

This session supports our managing mental health workshop, providing a refresher of how mental health becomes compromised, the impact on life and work as well as some specific information around the anxiety caused specifically due to Covid-19 and the impact of that on the brain, wellbeing and performance. 

 It provides guidance on managing people and teams remotely, advice on approaching conversations around mental health and support resources to direct people to should they need it, equipping managers with the knowledge, tools and confidence to better support their people to cope with Covid-related anxiety and build their individual personal resilience, so that they can cope more effectively with modern day challenges, both at home and at work.


This workshop is designed for CCC and PCC managers who have already attended the online Mental Health Awareness workshop or the Managing mental health workshop with Mental Health In The Workplace previously and who either 1) have team members who are struggling and do not feel confident and/or competent in supporting them, or 2) who just want to ensure that they are doing everything they can to enable their people teams and colleagues to maintain positive wellbeing

The ability to work from different locations, including from home, is not new and is regular practice for many of our services. However, the COVID-19 crisis has pushed teams to adopt remote working as a default right now and we appreciate that working through this rapid change can be hard, but it should also be embraced as a chance for organisation-wide innovation and a great opportunity to expand our capabilities and learn new approaches as an agile workforce of the future.

This learning will help you understand the issues and challenges of working remotely and provide ideas and methods to work through them, as well as help you to think about how you can reap the benefits that working remotely can offer. We welcome everyone to attend this 90 minute bitesize session that will guide you through a process to view and re-consider any stresses in your life. With a greater and less emotive appreciation of what triggers your stress and how you react, we can start to consider how to reduce our exposure and management of these pressured life events. Through a greater understanding of biological and psychological responses to stress, we can start to appreciate and plan certain strategies to help us cope effectively.At the end of the session you will understand what stress is and why we respond as we do. You will understand the harmful effect of stress hangers on and what the three types of stress are. Armed with this you will have created some clear and defined actions through categorizing your common stressors accordingly, while also losing a few along the way. We will guide you through some immediate strategies to help you cope with stress and facilitate you to reflect on what personal coping strategies work currently. We encourage you to plan some defined actions to help manage your stressors with further guidance on other support structures.

We are excited to be working with the Local Government Association (LGA) on an Apprenticeship Strategy and Action Plan which will shape our future plans for apprenticeship opportunities across the council. 

As part of this project the LGA are running facilitated workshops for staff to contribute their views, thoughts, ideas and experiences. 

The workshops are open to all staff, including those who are currently on or have recently competed an apprenticeship. 

Each workshop lasts for an hour and we are keen to encourage staff to attend.

What can I expect to learn? 

An increased understanding of apprenticeships, how they work and the opportunities available. Plus contributing to our future plans for how apprenticeships are offered and delivered throughout the council.
